This project is located on a plateau overlooking Spanish Peaks Resort with views of Lone Mountain in Big Sky, Montana. The forests nearby are filled with old growth trees.
A great opportunity was presented to design much of this structure such that we did not harm the existing “live” old growth. The result is a floor plan that provides for certain spaces to jut out from the forest to gather in the views of Lone Mountain while other spaces remain shrouded by forest. Timbers that are taken down will be used for porch columns and seats.
Design requirements given by the clients were opportunities to create exterior leisure patios that feature a fireplace and a built-in hot tub to utilize the views of Yellowstone National Park in the outdoor spaces. A cozy Sitting/Office area uses space in unique ways including the use of a library ladder as a featured element of the interior design. Log timbers will be used throughout the design in the Great Room, Dining and Entry. The Kitchen will feature a double island and plenty of space for activity with an emphasis on functionality.
A possible porte-cochiere may be implemented to greet guests as they approach on the meandering drive. Doubled-up log timbers, tobacco hue horizontal planks, and stone will be dominant on the exterior.
